• This release presents two 1960 King Curtis albums : ‘The New Scene of King Curtis’ and ‘Soul Meeting’. Tenorman Curtis (1934-1971) is best known as a rhythm and blues star, but, as he shows here, fronting two star-studded jazz rhythm sections, there was much more to him than that.

• Partnered on both albums by the trumpet/cornet of Nat Adderley and the piano of Wynton Kelly, Curtis is onfident, fluent and agile, building his solos with care and economy, his big, warm, wraparound tone recalling the blues-drenched power and authority of Gene Ammons.

• Two fine bass & drums pairings give superb support : Paul Chambers and Oliver Jackson on ‘New Scene’ and Sam Jones and Belton Evans on ‘Soul Meeting’. 2 albums on one CD - 11 tracks - 24-bit digitally remastered.
Reviews ForThe New Scene of King Curtis + Soul Meeting
Jazz Journal - Derek Ansell
Here he exercises his jazz chops to good effect with a solid Blue Note/Prestige type rhythm section of the day with Kelly outstanding in support.,***
Jazzwise - Roy Carr
Curtis doesn't try to dazzle, but plays it straight down the fairway, which makes this a most listenable experience.,***
