Mel Tormé was a singer, songwriter and arranger who was prominent throughout the post-war decades. Born in 1925, he came to the fore in his late teens as leader of the vocal group The Mel-Tones, having been an entertainer since childhood. This 61-track set includes Tormé’s recordings for Decca, where The Mel-Tones recorded both as lead artist and backing to the likes of Bing Crosby and Eugenie Baird, and Musicraft where they appeared with Artie Shaw’s and Sonny Burke’s orchestras. This delightful collection highlights the maturity of a precocious young talent, widely regarded as one of the classiest vocalists of his generation.
Reviews For The Early Years 1944-47 (3CD)
“Torme is always immaculate in phrasing and intonation and there is some wondeful stuff… Here the ballad material is really strong, from But Beautiful and A Cottage For Sale to Love Is The Sweetest Thing and a highspot of the jazzier tracks id Torme's spectacular scat on Night And Day.” – Ron Simpson
