These col legno live recordings from the annual Darmstadt new music festivals have themselves become something of an institution by now, and the 1998 offering lives up to expectations, with a wide variety of instrumental solos and combinations, a couple of world premičres, and the European premičre of a work for Japanese instruments by the late John Cage. Apart from Cage and György Kurtag, none of the composers are exactly household names, but for listeners willing to experiment, here is a treasure trove awaiting discovery!
