Ellington's elaborate musical fantasy paralleling the history of jazz, written in collaboration with Billy Strayhorn. Recorded in 1956 with full orchestra and vocalists Margaret Tynes, Joya Sherrill and Ozzie Bailey. The original idea for this work apparently stemmed from a suggestion by Orson Welles in 1941 but the project was set aside for many years
Reviews For A Drum is a Woman (Mini LP Sleeve)
The Jazz Rag - Hugh Ledigo
Ellington emplys his instrumental voices to telling effect, creating atmosphere rather that verisimilitude, and his orchestration is by turns thick and lush, strident and impassioned. It is, I think, a theatrical masterpiece.
