• Hailing from a small city in the Ivory Coast, Manou Gallo is an extraordinary talent with an innovative style. Raised by her grandmother, Gallo was attracted to the bass guitar at an early age. Having developed her skills and flamboyant grooves with Marcellin Yacé, the star caught the attention of Zap Mama - the musical vehicle for Belgian artist Marie Daulne - in the late 1990s. After performing with them for six years, Gallo went on to release three solo albums: Dida (2003) Manou Gallo (2007) and Lowlin (2010). She also produced and played with the group Mokoomba on 2011’s Rising Tide. Now, on Afro Groove Queen, the star combines her soulful African roots with funk, jazz, blues and hip-hop to create a delightfully eclectic and multi-layered collage of sound. Adding his considerable talents to the release is producer Bootsy Collins. Having risen to prominence with James Brown in the early 70s, and later with Parliament - Funkadelic, Collins also appears on the tracks ABJ Groove, Leve-Toi Et Move, Dalla and Come Together - a song that also sees notable contributions from Aziza Love, Jessi Jumanji and Public Enemy’s Chuck D. Marie Daulne and Manu Dibango also add to proceedings on the tracks Zap Gallo and Yale.
Reviews For Afro Groove Queen (Feat. Bootsy Collins)
Songlines - Robin Denselow
Get zapped by Ivory Coast harmonies and funk royalty… A classy and varied set that shows Gallo doesn't need celebrity backing to succeed. ****
RNR ( Issue 74) - Norman Darwen
"An enjoyable album featuring a vocal by Bootsy Collins which overlay a tough, pounding backing propelled by Mano’s deep, deep bass playing.”
