Late ‘40s and early 50’s recordings by the great guitarist & singer, Lonnie Johnson - whose recording career lasted off and on from 1925 till the mid-1960s - longer than almost anyone’s in blues history. Apart from his virtuoso talent, this was also due to his musical diversity - recording solo, playing a variety of instruments, backing country blues singers, recording with Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five and Duke Ellington, duets with Eddie Lang, accompanying Victoria Spivey and so on.
The recordings on this disc followed his biggest R&B Chart Hit : the chart-topping Tomorrow Night in 1948, and include Johnson’s final R&B chart entry, a cover of Paul Gayten’s Confused which made it to #11 in February 1950. There are also two excellent, unusual Johnson covers of Country hits by the Delmore Brothers’ Trouble Ain’t Nothing But The Blues and Blues Stay Away From Me. After these recordings Lonnie Johnson was overtaken by the Rock & Roll years and didn’t record again until the early 60’s.

Blues & Rhythm - Byron Foulger
One of blue's most outstanding and recognisable performers, both his guitar work and voice being captivating and more or less unique.
