This celebrated June ‘87 Tokyo performance, complete for the first time on one DVD set, with excellent image and sound quality, is certainly one of Chet's best filmed performance ever. He seems to be in good shape and mood here, and plays and sings beautifully backed by the superb Harold Danko on piano, with Hein van de Geijn (bass) and John Engels (drums). Nothing here seems to foretell Baker's death, which would happen less than a year later. The program includes both favourite standards like "My Funny Valentine" and "Stella by Starlight", some tunes by Baker's favourite jazz star, Miles Davis, and a few tunes he had added recently to his repertoire, like Elvis Costello's "Almost Blue".
Chet displays his customary magic and extraordinary sensibility throughout this performance. Four additional songs were recorded, but unfortunately not filmed, by Japanese TV. So, in order to give you the complete performance, Impro Jazz have included the missing tunes as audio bonus tracks. Total Time: 88 min. / Color / Hi-Fi Stereo.
