Monte Easter
Volume 2 1952-1960
Blue Moon
Cat No:
Price £10.99
Volume 2 devoted to neglected LA trumpeter, vocalist and bandleader Monte Easter. The tracks here, mostly 1952-54, are of special interest since they feature the innovative guitarist Jimmy Nolen. It was Nolen’s riff that drove along Johnny Otis’ 1957 hit “Willie and the Hand Jive” and he assured himself a place in the annals of popular black music by joining James Brown’s backing band in 1965 and inventing the “chicken scratch” style that became the hallmark of funk guitar playing.
Reviews For Volume 2 1952-1960
Blues & Rhythm - Byron Foulger
Following on from Blue Moon's Marvin Johnson issue, these two issues feature another, largely unsung, 'hero' of the West Coast's burgeoning jazz/r&b scene of the late forties and fifties. Volume two is the tougher sounding, more r&b compared to swing, album, but both volumes are well worth obtaining, saluting a true west coast.
