• Majid Bekkas is a Moroccan musician - a master of Gnawa tradition and its emblematic instrument, the ‘guembri’. He also plays oud and guitar. On this album of traditional and self-composed pieces he is accompanied by Ablaye Cissoko, on kora, and Khalid Kouhen, percussion. All three also provide vocals.

• His influences include Ali Farka Toure, Boubacar Traore, and Wes Montgomery, and his style reveals a wealth of techniques. The album "Mabrouk" is distinguished mainly by dialogue between Bekkas and the kora of Ablaye Cissoko. On one piece, they created an arrangement for lyrics by the Mandingo group Touré Kunda.

• Alongside his career as a traditional musician, Majid Bekkas has also collaborated with jazz musicians including Archie Shepp, Pedro Soler, Flavio Boltro, Klaus Doldinger, and Joachim Kuhn and Ramon Lopez.

• His previous album "Makenba" was with Louis Sclavis and Minino Garay - and his first project, outside of Morocco, was with Peter Brötzmann and Hamid Drake at the Mulhouse Jazz Festival, in 1997.
